The responsibilities of Food Banks should be put into the hands of commercial and industrial businesses which work in the food and drinks sector

UK businesses selling food and drinks are producing tonnes of waste each year. When stuff doesn’t sell once it has been reduced on the shelves, it is thrown straight into the bin. Factories are throwing out food and drinks just because the product didn’t make its way passed quality control however most of these products are still edible to eat and drink.

The UK Government needs to clamp down on businesses to ensure that before food and drinks reach their end of shelf life or don’t make it passed quality control are handed to people in poverty. The UK Government needs to come up with a scheme to ensure this happens. By supporting those in poverty, food waste can be cut down.

According to WRAP UK, An estimated total of food and drink waste produced by commercial and industrial businesses amount to around 31 million tonnes per year with a value of over 5.1 billion per year.
